Red Lion Christian Academy has long been known for pumping out top-notch football talent and in the last month the Scarlet Knights have handed out multiple offers to members of their junior class.  The latest to receive an RU offer is Wendell Smallwood – a tailback with explosive speed and a knack for breaking off major runs.

“I like the new coaching staff at Rutgers.  They’ve written me a lot and I’ve called them recently.  They keep in touch with me on Facebook and they tell me to keep working hard and keep my grades up.  I like people that push me, so that’s been positive for me,” said Smallwood, who added that staying close to home would be a plus.

Smallwood learned of his Rutgers offer on the same day as teammate Jahmere Irvin-Sills.  The idea of playing with Irvin-Sills is no small draw for the standout junior.

“That would be great for me. I’ve been able to see the facilities and the academics there are great, they have a very heavy focus on that.  It would be a great school to go to,” said the 5-foot-11, 203 pound athlete.

In 2011, Smallwood put himself on the map when he ran for more than 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns in Red Lion’s powerful offense.

“I think this season went well for me, I had over 1,000 yards rushing and we were sort of successful as a team.  We didn’t win all the games we should have, and I missed two with an ankle injury.  My recruitment took off though once my film got out there and that was a great feeling,” Smallwood said.

Smallwood and Irvin-Sills plan to come to Rutgers a day prior to the 7-on-7 event on campus to check everything out in-depth.  Currently, Smallwood also holds offers from Temple, Auburn, Connecticut, and West Virginia with interest from the likes of Penn State and USC.  When might we see Smallwood decide on a school?

“It’s not going to be right away, I want to wait it out and see where is the best fit for me.  I want to take my time and work through it with my parents, not too early but not too late.  I think I’ll decide before the football season though.”
